Royal Reed is a Partner at Meredith Connell and On Being Bold Member
Organisations Supporting Community & Society Royal Reed is a partner with Meredith Connell (www.mc.co.nz) and On Being Bold member. In her video Royal says that as a leader it is wonderful to think that hopefully with our leadership we will be able to see the organisation through a really tough time at any stage. From Covid I think everyone now has realised that our purpose to our organisation does not stop there. It actually goes further to support the community and society as a whole, because everyone is potentially in for a very difficult time. We need to stick together and make some really valuable changes that will help us protect more people from losing their lifestyle and their ability to progress. Silvana Schenone is a Partner at MinterEllisonRuddWatts & On Being Bold member
What have you learnt from lockdown & Covid? Silvana Schenone is a Partner and Head of Corporate at MinterEllisonRuddWatts (www.minterellison.co.nz) and On Being Bold member. Silvana shares that lockdown and Covid has taught us all that we are vulnerable. Vulnerability affects everyone from the most powerful people, the most senior people, men and women and irrespective of what we have or what we have achieved in life. Her realisation was that there will always be something outside of our control and that we need to learn to deal with it - break down the components of your stress, try to deal with things one at a time, and understand and accept that you can't control everything and you can't manage everything. Do your best; but don't stress about things you can't control. Melissa Chan-Green is a Newshub Reporter / Presenter at MediaWorks
The Role Of Media in Challenging Times Melissa Chan-Green is a Reporter / Presenter for Newshub, Discovery NZ (see www.newshub.co.nz & www.instagram.com/melchangreen). Melissa discusses the role of the media in challenging times. She notes the media plays a huge role in the rebuilding of the New Zealand economy and communities as well as sharing the social impacts. In her video she says the media is a tool to tell people's stories about their businesses and how they are coping, and to tell their stories socially. This is particularly the case in isolating times, where the media is a way to share social experiences, and bring people together, where they may not have a lot of people around them. The media is an important tool to discuss what it is that we are experiencing. It is an information tool as well as an entertainment tool when we need some escapism. We will continue to be an important tool in terms of information and entertainment, but really crucially telling people's stories and sharing those experiences, so that people know that they are not alone. Ally Zhang is CEO at SkyKiwi
Working Together To Get A New Way Of Getting Things Done Ally Zhang is CEO of SkyKiwi (www.skykiwi.com & www.weibo.com/skykiwidotcom) which provides precise and high quality information to the Chinese community. In her video Ally talks about how their company is looking to reach all the Kiwi communities and Chinese communities to eliminate a lot of misunderstanding. Ally Zhang notes there are a lot of tense relationships between New Zealand and China, so this is our responsibility to tell people that when trying to recover from the bad economy, we really have to work together and find a new way to get things effectively done. And in managing business we have to use a focus group and share not only our strategy, but also your strategy, then we can discuss this. And with the right business people and group we can definitely find a way to help all of us. Ngapera Riley is CEO at Figure.NZ
What do you do when things do not go to plan? Ngapera Riley is CEO of Figure.NZ (www.figure.nz), a company that works in data and technology, where things are constantly changing and do not go to plan. The team is used to working on something that might not go as planned. Ngapera says you need to keep solving the problems as they come up. She observes that they are lucky they work in an industry where they can almost count on things changing. Ngapera Riley notes that what helps with change, especially a global once in a lifetime change, is taking time to stop and reflect - what is happening? What can I control, what can't we control? What are the things we can manage, and what are the things we can't? When things get hard sometimes, it's OK to cry, to have a moment where you acknowledge things are really difficult. It may not be in my control, I know I feel scared or worried, and that's actually OK. Also, Ngapera says take the time to reflect and surround yourself with people who can help you through those times. Cissy Gu is Implementation Manager, ASB Bank
We all agree the squiggly line connecting home life and careers is anything but straight-forward. How do you approach this? Cissy Gu is Implementation Manager at ASB Bank (www.asb.co.nz). Cissy notes that especially for women, from her own experience, we can be quite harsh in terms of what we want to achieve. Partially this is to do with the impact of social media. We look at those beautiful photos from Instagram, from Facebook; it seems to be this is the beautiful life that we need to portray to the world, or this is the standard if you are a great mum, or these are the other things you need to do. Some of the practices that Cissy is learning and developing to help cope includes just not worrying about these things. Cissy says be kind to yourself and look at things you can do. And be clear on how you define success. She says this helps me to build resilience, because if the expectation is not as high as she thought before, it just becomes easier. I just focus on the things that I can do, and focus on doing these really really well. And also allow time for things that really matter to herself, including allowing time for indulging herself. So now that school holidays have just finished, how will you be approaching that squiggly line? See Cissy's full video and others at www.onbeingbold.co.nz/videos #OnBeingBold #OBBseries #OBBSeries4 #LookingForwardRebuilding #GuestSpeaker #AmandaMalu #FutureEnablers #OBBposts #OBBvideos #BoldNews #BeingOpen #BeingBold #NewZealand #NewZealandWomen

Nick Grayston is Chief Executive at The Warehouse Group
Resilience and Agility In The Face Of Rapid Change Nick Grayston is Chief Executive Officer at The Warehouse Group (www.thewarehousegroup.co.nz). He discusses the role of Agility in the face of rapid change. Nick has observed that in businesses around the world, hierarchical command and control with layers and silos is no longer fit for purpose. For this reason The Warehouse flipped to a new agile model. A lot of companies have seen in the lockdown and disruption of Covid, that the companies that are agile have responded better because they have been able to pivot much more quickly. One of the fundamental tenets of that is empowerment - freedom within framework. It doesn't mean just chaos, because there is a structure and framework around it. Training people and then trusting them to execute is key. And cross-functional working groups is absolutely critical to driving that agility. Nick Grayston confirms that the result is that the companies that are agile are able to respond more quickly. Amanda Malu is Chief Executive at Whānau Āwhina Plunket
What could you do differently? Amanda Malu is Chief Executive at Whānau Āwhina Plunket (www.plunket.org.nz and @plunketnz). With 1100 staff and being present in 85% of homes with newborn babies you might think putting a two-year strategy into action in two weeks is impossible? Amanda recalls that a time of crises can create great opportunities. In her video we hear Amanda note some great opportunities. "We have always had in our plan a strategy to become a much more nimble and innovative service deliverer. Digital delivery has always been on the plan. We thought it would take two years, and we did it in two weeks. Because we had to, we didn't have any choice." Nicole Rosie is Chief Executive of Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency
Enablers For The Future What opportunities are you seeing this year? Nicole Rosie is Chief Executive of Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (www.nzta.govt.nz). Nicole sat down with OBB Member Jolie Hodson and shared some of her experiences and learnings. In the early part of her video Nicole Rosie shares the huge impact the pandemic had in multiple ways across the organisation and how the team was able to resource the changes and respond to these challenges. One of the huge opportunities out of Covid that Nicole Rosie notes was to enable people to work more flexibly and for teams to connect in multiple ways. This is a good reminder of this enabler now and in the future. Nicole also identifies the ways she personally practices in times of sustained pressure. Watch Nicole's full video to learn more on the three ways she did this: One - always exercise each day (an hour to an hour and a half). Two - ensure you take breaks and get time out. Three - have a very good team and delegate - it is about having a highly empowered organisation. Carmen Vicelich - Founder and Global CEO, Valocity
Adapting and Being Agile What lessons do you draw on when in crises mode? Carmen Vicelich is Founder and Global CEO of Valocity (https://www.valocityglobal.com). Carmen went back to her entrepreneurial lessons. Carmen Vicelich notes she has two businesses and one of the businesses is global in many countries. Watch the video and you will see Carmen's first frame of reference is realising you are in a crises mode. She goes on to say as an entrepreneur you're going pretty fast, you're pretty agile, but this was certainly something unprecedented: And our experience with the crises was really recognising there were lots of things outside our control. Going back to some of those entrepreneurial lessons, of thinking: worry about what you can worry about, and have a Plan A, Plan B, Plan C and Plan D, and be incredibly agile. So at first it was this is incredibly unknown and unprecedented; then acceptance, then recognising that actually our businesses have grown because of agility. So "we've got this" was our mindset. Joan Withers - Looking Forward and Rebuilding Better
What are you doing to cope and build resilience in a Covid World? When it comes to building resilience Joan Withers, OBB Member, gives wise counsel on getting things in perspective and knowing that this too will pass. The best way to get through any challenge is working through it. Joan shares "I firmly believe in 'bits of the elephant' where something may seem overwhelming when you get into it, but actually as you progress and go through it, you start to see your own progress." It is important too to get support around you - think about the people you love and who love you. Get some confidence that ultimately it will be OK. Joan Withers also talks about rebuilding New Zealand; this is a great opportunity to get insights into what it is like as a Director of businesses like The Warehouse Group, ANZ New Zealand and Sky TV. Are you looking to change the way you are thinking and working this year, either personally or organisationally? Frances Valintine traverses a number of areas including coping and building resilience, how we sustain people and businesses, right through to the organisation's role in rebuilding New Zealand. Frances notes she is a person who goes into planning mode very quickly when the pressure comes on. "I break my days down into hour long increments, and say, what do I need to achieve in the next hour? What will stop me doing things? What do I need to do more of, and what should I stop doing? Frances also shares the extraordinary step she took to handle the lack of internet connectivity at home. Frances Valintine is an OBB Member and the founder & CEO of The Mind Lab (@NZMindlab) & Tech Futures Lab (@techfutureslab). A recognised education futurist, she outlines in the full video her take on the future in a Covid world. Jolie Hodson - Looking Forward and Rebuilding Better
Have you enjoyed the water cooler conversations in getting back into the new year? Jolie Hodson notes in her video she enjoys these. At the same time one thing Jolie learned over the lockdown period was working in a more virtual way. Life slowed down and she had time and space - quieter on the weekends and evenings. So she will be actively considering: What can I do in person and what can I do virtually? That’s good for balance of life, sustainability and the economy. In the video Jolie Hodson talks about the things she does to help adapt to change and build resilience. One thing Jolie mentions is putting people around her which ultimately creates a better solution, since we don’t have all the answers ourselves. Watch the full video and find out more about this and how Jolie is engaging with mindfulness, breathing, yoga - which are good in times of pressure. Watch also to learn more about how @sparknz are approaching flexible working and helping to rebuild the New Zealand economy along with other organisations. Toni Moyes - Previously COO, Montoux and now Head of International for Sharesies
This year, one insight Covid has made us reflect on is being open and transparent in the face of crises. Toni Moye’s video is part of Series 4: Looking Forward and Rebuilding Better. Formerly with Montoux, Toni is now Head of International for Sharesies. OBB Member Royal Reed is Guest Editor for Series 4 and you can read her post and watch related videos at www.onbeingbold.co.nz/looking-forward-rebuilding-better In Toni’s video she outlines her initial experience when facing the crisis and notes with the right approach she would react with less anxiety. Toni notes: As a leader when your business is facing some kind of new crisis your initial instinct for many of us is to want to protect people, and not have your team members face the stress you are facing. However, through this process we went through steps of being open and transparent with our staff and asking them to be involved in creating the solutions that we needed. If I were doing this again I would have far less anxiety about that process. Just go … “we’ve got great people, they get it, they want the best for our business, let’s do everything we can to share these challenges amongst as many people as we can. And people are really up for that.” #OnBeingBold #OBBseries #OBBSeries4 #LookingForwardRebuildingBetter #RoyalReed #ToniMoyes #OBBposts #OBBvideos #BoldNews #BeingOpen #BeingFlexible #NewZealand #NewZealandWomen #2021

As we look forward in 2021, Covid-19 has brought focus to many areas of our business and personal lives. Our Guest Editor, for Series 4 of Bold News, OBB Member Royal Reed, introduces Helen Chiang, Director, Family Office, Eightfold Financial Services Group. Helen Chiang reminds us of some key take outs: - Increase your opportunities by making connections within your communities and networks. - Select the right focus, such as the safety and wellbeing for oneself and family, colleagues, friends and communities. Communicate with customers. - Think long term but take action in the short term. - We cannot choose what changes happen, but we can choose our attitude and behaviour. In the context of rebuilding the New Zealand economy, Helen notes too that helping your customers get through difficult times helps to rebuild the economy. Antonia Watson - CEO, ANZ - Looking Forward and Rebuilding
Watch the full video from Antonia Watson - CEO at ANZ. Antonia notes that although she was able to see what was happening with COVID early on from overseas locations, there were some key aspects that needed agility in addressing and rebuilding over 2020. Responding quickly to customers was important with 50,000 calls in the first week from customers understandably concerned about how they would pay their home loan and what would happen if they had no salary for a period of time. She notes "We did things that we have never done at that type of speed ever before in the history of the bank." This meant ANZ had to be really conscious of staff wellbeing. Although flexible working operates across ANZ, some people didn't have an ideal home for working from home. There was talk of working on ironing boards. Antonia Watson notes the team were cognisant that people needed extra support. We rolled out apps and we encouraged leaders in our teams to stay in touch. Whilst the awareness that we're all in this together meant there is an opportunity to really help our customers which is uniting and motivating, at the same time you might be worried about your family, your home schooling, your partner's job, and the conditions you are working from home in. So these different aspects needed to be considered. Antonia Watson shares that ANZ is excited to be a part of rebuilding the country: "Being a part of the rebuild is really exciting for us." Antonia notes that with the rebuilding of New Zealand the bank has got the ability to appropriately help businesses or homeowners through a tough patch, extend more credit where people can see the light at the end of the tunnel, and can see that with a bit of a tide over, their business will get back to normal or they will resume full time full paid employment. Cathy Quinn - Looking Forward and Rebuilding Better
In Series 4 the focus is on looking forward and rebuilding. Cathy Quinn, OBB Member notes flexible working is one of the positives out of Covid. It has shown people that you can be productive working from home. Of course as Cathy notes ... you need to get a desk at home! Watch Cathy's video and pick how she has learned to be resilient. She also addresses how our organisations can perform a role in rebuilding New Zealand's economy. This is about looking forward and Cathy details some different roles organisations are taking in the rebuilding of the New Zealand economy, including affordable housing, sustainability, climate change and tourism. OBB Year 13 Dreaming Big 2020 - Panel Discussion - Angela Busby
OBB Year 13 Dreaming Big 2020 - Panel Discussion - Stories From The Front Line - Angela Busby Introduced by OBB Member Joan Withers, our Guest Speaker Angela Busby shows there are many routes to success. Angela Busby is Chief Strategy Officer of AIA NZ. AIA is the biggest global insurer in the world. She is also chair of TAHITO, the ethical indigenous investment business. Before joining AIA, Angela held roles as Chief People & Culture Officer at Sovereign, Managing Principal of ASB Securities and General Manager of Aegis. When at ASB Securities, Angela played an active role in developing and establishing Whakaterehia - ASB's Maori Leadership programme. Angela shared her 30 years of finance experience in a Dreaming Big session 'Stories From The Front Line'. An aspect of life Angela wants us to capitalise on is seizing opportunity. "One thing you need to think about, whatever you do in life; if you get opportunities to do something, do it! Because that is when the magic happens. Listen to Angela as she rides the transition from corporate banking to surfing, with a personal tragedy being the thing that helped her decide to change direction. Dreaming Big is an On Being Bold initiative. It's a group of female leaders, here in New Zealand, who have come together over the last few years to make leadership more accessible for aspiring young women.
