Preparing For A New Year (Series 1 Ep 1)

Happy New Year and Kia Ora to all the Boldsters out there! It is great to have you back at onbeingbold.co.nz for 2020. I hope you have all had a great holiday and enjoyed some quality time with family and friends. I know I am feeling refreshed and ready to go again.

I am your friendly editor from the OBB team for January. Throughout the year one of us will be your guest editor and I luckily drew the first straw!

The theme I have picked for January is getting ready for a new year. We have lots of videos filled with tips and tricks on getting ready to be your best self in 2020, please join me each episode as we think about new year preparation in different ways.

If you came to the Bold Steps conference in December on Leading with Purpose then thanks for your time and your company. The OBB team had a blast and the speakers were all individually and collectively brilliant and challenged us all to think differently. I spoke to one woman who told me as a result of listening to Prof. Will Steffan that she was going to buy an electric car that very weekend! So, we definitely had an impact.

The Deadly Ponies handbags were without question a big hit also. In fact, I felt a little distracted as MC when there was stampede for the stage to put business cards in the bowl for the draws!

And what better way to end a conference on purpose than to have a close chat with the Prime Minister. She was very inspiring and very real. It was lovely just to be able to talk and ask questions in a reasonably relaxed way with no prepared speeches. We all felt she was very generous to participate like that and I think we are all a bit star struck as a result!

So a big thanks to everyone involved and if you weren’t there or you want to relive the day I have included a highlights reel and a few pics with my first editor’s piece. As an aside we are currently planning the 2020 conference and will be back in touch with details shortly.

It is so hard to believe we have started a new decade. I distinctly remember staying up to see in the new millennium 20 years ago – it really seems like yesterday. Some of you might remember that at the time we were all so worried about what was called “Y2K”. There was a lot of concern that IT systems developed in the late 1900s wouldn’t know how to cope with dates that didn’t start with a 19. Turns out with some good planning things weren’t so bad and life carried on.

Now in 2020 we are facing some different challenges and there are some that require urgent action as well as some seriously good planning. If we don’t, we might not be as lucky as we were with Y2K. Climate Change is one of those issues and quite possibly the penultimate issue of our time, you can feel the work programmes to combat the impact gearing up significantly but we also know there is so much to do. So for each of us in our work it is important we are focussed in our own ways on this and the other big issues of the day to ensure we are well placed for every other decade coming our way.

We also need to ensure we set ourselves up for success both personally and professionally. If you can manage it some quiet time over the holidays dedicated to thinking about your goals in every aspect of your life would be a great place to start. Even if it is while you are sitting by the pool watching the kids!

However you manage it being able to articulate our goals makes them more likely to be achieved – and remember to be both bold and cognisant of your purpose when you do.

We all juggle so many things and it can be hard to see the wood for the trees once the year really starts up.

This week I want to share a welcome video and also a couple of others. Firstly, a look at the big issues of the decade with Andy Coupe (Chairman TVNZ) and then some sage advice from my fellow OBB team member Joan Withers (Chair of the Warehouse Group). I hope you enjoy these videos and consider how you are preparing for 2020.
